Concessions needed for Maori house dream
Tamaki Makaurau MP Peeni Henare says Maori whanau will need extra help if they are to get into some of the so called affordable homes going up in his electorate.
Developers plan to create almost 1800 homes on the former Monier brickworks site in New Lynn.
The land has been designated a special housing zone, which means developments can be fast tracked long as at least 10 per cent of the homes are affordable and sold to first-time buyers.
Mr Henare says there is still no plan for getting Maori into any of those houses.
"What we require from the government to be able to allow our people into these opportunities are some concessions. We can't afford to go in expected to pay market rate. Some people are quite judgemental about that kind of view but thats just our reality. We need concessions to allow our people to enter into that market" he says.
Peeni Henare says as the New Lynn development is being seen as a model for other new special housing areas, it’s import that it the done right.
