Doctoral student says Parihaka must not happen again
Funding will help a a student with whanau connections to one of the country's most sacred places, Parihaka to undertake a major new study into the passive resistance movement.
Tonga Karena who has whakapapa to Taranaki Te Atiawa and Tuhoe and is a regular visitor to Parihaka has been awarded a $75,000 grant by the Marsden Research Fund to do a doctoral thesis through Otago University's National Centre of Peace and Conflict Studies to develop a unique perspective of the settlement based on the stories of people closely associated with Parihaka.
"Its an histroical marker like Hiroshima to remind New Zealand and our children that it should never happen again."
Tonga Karena says he wants to be bold enough to speak for the people from their point of view.
