Wall to Wall
Labour MP Louisa Wall says Serco mismanagement of Mt Eden Prison shows that a private operator is not right for running prisons which needs to understand Maori cultural and identity issues.
Loiusa Wall who has Serco run Wiri Women's Prison in her electorate says a private operator is there to make a profit which means getting away with as few staff as possible while public sector operators will put rehabilitation as a top priority.
Lousia Wall says the focus needs to be on returning people to their whanau with skills so they can be integrated back into the community.
She says the prison issue highlights the basic failure of the Government's policy of using private companies to deliver social services.
