Maori Broadcasting star passes away
The opening of the new Maori art gallery has been tinged with great sadness with the passing of one of the bright young stars of Maori broadcasting – Anzac Pikia.
35 year old Anzac Pikia, who was in Rotorua to attend the opening of Penny Haka art gallery at Whakarewarewa village, died suddenly yesterday morning.
Of Ngati Hikairo and Ngati Maniapoto descent Anzac Pikia, who came from Kawhia, has spent nearly 20 years in Maori broadcasting with Maori television's then more recently as a presenter-producer on TVNZ's Te Karere.
His knowledge and passion of Te Reo Maori was extensive and he was acknowledged as a connoisseur of kapa haka throughout the country.
Tangi arrangements have not been finalised but it is understood that after a service in Auckland today he will be taken to lie in state at Parawera marae in the Waikato.
