Vaping safety prompts call for smoking policy rethink
A Maori smoking researcher says it’s time to stop demonising nicotine and accept that electronic cigarettes are a safe alternative.
Marewa Glover says while tobacco control advocates continue to push treatments aimed at complete cessation, millions of people around the world have made their own choice to get nicotine in a different form.
The technology has evolved, and what are now known as personal vaporisers are no longer a gimmick but a safe way to take in nicotine.
Dr Glover says public health professionals need to listen to the smokers turned vapers and remember that the issue is health, not addictive substances.
Marewa Glover says New Zealand needs to rethink some of the restriction it places around the availability of personal vaporisers.
