Mediaworks buckles in Tamihere defamation case
Mediaworks has made a confidential settlement of the defamation case brought against it by former Labour MP John Tamihere over the circumstances of his departure from Radio Live.
The end of Mr Tamihere’s 8-year talkback career was linked to controversy over the Roastbusters issue, where young people in west Auckland were boasting online about non-consensual sexual activity.
MediaWorks today apologised publically for its handing of the announcement.
It confirmed that its own Broadcasting Standards Committee had investigated and completely exonerated Mr Tamihere from any breach of any broadcasting standards.
MediaWorks acknowledged he acted completely professionally, entirely within the bounds of his role as a ‘talk back host’ and with good taste and decency.
“It unreservedly apologised for any harm caused to Mr Tamihere’s reputation and mana as a result of its actions.
Mr Tamihere said he was happy the matter has been resolved after what had been a tough 18 months on his children and family.
