Art guide wins library award

A guide to Maori art has taken out the non-fiction prize in this year’s Library and Information Association’s annual children and young adult book awards.
Maori Art for Kids by Julie Noanoa and Norm Heke features 15 activities suitable for preschoolers to older crafters, with step by step photos as well as discussion of an artist who has produced work in the relevant art form.
Te Kura Ponamu Award for te reo publications went to Kimihia by Te Mihinga Komene and Scott Pearson, about two boys vying to win the school talent quest.
Other winners included Mrs Mo’s Monster by Paul Beavis for its illustrations, Night Vision by Ella West in the fiction section and I am Rebecca by Fleur Beale as the librarians’ choice.
It’s the 70th year the awards have been held.
