Kohanga Reo Trust not trusted
It doesn’t look good.
That’s the view of Maori Development Minister Te Ururoa Flavell about ongoing tension between the government and Te Kohanga Reo National Trust over governance and accountability.
In an attempted spoiler to a Native Affairs interview with former trust board member Toni Waho to be run on Maori Television tonight, TVNZ’s Marae Investigates grilled Education Minister Hekia Parata on why she was still to implement Waitangi Tribunal recommendations to address historic under-funding of kohanga reo.
Mr Flavell told Radio Waatea host Dale Husband he shares Minister Parata’s concerns about the organisation’s governance.
"In the back of it is the issues that are still swirling there with respect to the possibility, or just the look I suppose of it, is that is it right that certain people have profited from their positions in the kohanga reo movement? I'm not saying yes or no, whether it's right or wrong. It's just that you asked me to comment on the 'look' and the look is it doesn't look good. And that's where some kohanga reo have had an issue with the governance of kohanga reo," he says.
