Teachers named for Education Council
Education Minister Hekia Parata believes the inaugural Education Council of Aotearoa New Zealand has the experience and skills to raise the quality of the country’s teachers.
The appointed board replaces the elected New Zealand Education Council as the sector’s regulatory and professional body.
It includes nine leading educationalists, including Kawerau Maori medium principal Ripeka Lessels and Melbourne-based Anthony Mackay, who headed a similar organisation in Australia.
Ms Parata says innovative Auckland principal Barbara Ala’alatoa has agreed to chair the roopu.
"She’s an absolute professional. She puts kids at the heart of everything, and in her own school of Sylvia Park, parents, families, whanau, aiga feel absolutely welcome and involved and those are all the factors we want to see operating in schools across New Zealand. I think Barbara will bring a really fresh and dynamic leadership to this pretty important role," says the minister.
