Maui field permit extended

A Taranaki iwi is considering whether to appeal a marine consent given to Shell Todd Oil Services to continue running its Maui offshore oil and gas field for a further 35 years.
Te Korowai o Nga Ruahine chief executive Cassandra Crowley says the hearing panel refused to consider its submissions on the cumulative impact of drilling in the region.
It also refused to go along with Nga Ruahine’s view that a 15 year consent was enough.
"We think the environment is going to change a lot in terms of regulations, technologies around oil and gas and potentially around where we see some of the marine and coastal area. We thought that 35 years was quite away in the future, given all those uncertainties in the medium term" she says.
Cassandra Crowley says consultation with mana whenua was inadequate, and groups wanting to object to the 35-year consent had less than 35 days to do so.
