More than one in 8 of the gay or bi men newly-diagnosed with HIV last year were Maori, according to NZ AIDS Foundation figures.
In keeping with the changing demographics of Auckland where most cases are detected, 15 percent were Asian and 60 percent Pakeha.
The foundation has just hired a prevention worker to reach out to the country's Asian population.
It has had a Maori stream for a long time.
Some 50 of the 136 cases were contracted overseas.
