Gout research gets funding

Auckland University researchers are trying to find relief for gout sufferers.
It's one of five projects that are part of a five-year Health Research Council-funded study into prevention and management of several bone-related conditions.
Lead researcher professor Ian Reid says a team led by Professor Nicola Dalbeth will try to find effective combinations of drugs for the most severe cases.
He says it's a form of arthritis that affects disproportionately large numbers of Maori and Pacific men, and it can't be dismissed as a trivial pain in the big toe.
