Kaikoura centre to upskill kaitiaki

The University of Canterbury is establishing a national centre of marine conservation and education at Kaikoura.
Researcher Dr Sharyn Goldstein says O Kahukura, O Marokura is a collaboration with Te Runanga o Kaikoura which has been working with local councils to protect the area’s rich marine and birdlife.
It will offer an education programme driven by iwi values and using scientific research to enhance kaitiakitanga and customary conservation tools.
She says it will help build an informed conservation workforce in local and central government.
Dr Goldstein says the goal of O Kahukura, O Marokura is to create a working education model for the sustainable management of local resources and to develop kaitiakitanga throughout New Zealand.
