Jobs and tikanga on Ngati Porou wish list

Ngati Porou's new chief executive says the East Coast tribe is ready for economic and social growth.
Dean Moana takes up the role in August, once he finishes his responsibilties as head of Aotearoa Fisheries' Prepare Foods subsidiary.
He says a key of the job will be managing expectations among those who want to see tangible outcomes from the East Coast tribe's treaty settlemement.
"I guess the saying is 'ma te huruhuru, ka rere te manu'. Economic development will drive social development. It's getting a strategy to drive the growth in our region to provide all those jobs, health, education, te reo ake me tikanga o Ngati Porou. That is the challenge. How do you deliver that with the resources that we have," he says.
Dean Moana says the recent death of Ngati Porou rangatira Apirana Mahuika was a reminder of the need the tribe has to capture the knowledge it has for future generations.
