New facilty for southside trades academy

Maori and Pasifika trades training in south Auckland got a boost this week with the opening of a $3.5 million trades centre at the Southern Cross Campus in Mangere.
Education Minister Hekia Parata says it will allow the school’s trades academy to provide on-site courses on construction, plumbing, automotive engineering and robotics.
She says it means students will remain engaged and achieve at school, while gaining practical experience in work-related areas.
The school says the academy boosts achievement, with 80 per cent of the students who completed the programme in 2013 also getting their NCEA Level 2.
The new centre is part of a $27 million upgrade of the campus.
