George Henare revisits first role
A new theatre company is promising a crash course in Maori theatre at its opening in west Auckland tomorrow.
Ruia Taitea Creative has converted a warehouse in Portage Rd, New Lynn into its new playhouse and rehearsal space.
Actor Tainui Tukiwaho says they want to make a space where Maori feel comfortable and able to present new work.
The theatre will be opened and named at a family-oriented event starting at 10am, and then there will be a fundraiser starting at 6.30,
It starts with a nod to one of the first major pieces of Maori professional theatre, the 1965 New Zealand Opera Company production of Porgy and Bess led by Inia Te Wiata and featuring George Henare.
"George Henare will be singing and having a korero about Maori theatre and his journey, it's his 50th anniversary as a professional Maori artist this year. We have scenes out of Briar Grace Smiths plays, Albert Belz, Midge Tawhi Thomas, Rachel Whare is going to make an appearance, Rachel House sorry, Jennifer Ward Lealand, Nicola Kawana. Theres going to be a whole bunch of artists" says Tainui Tukiwaho
