Indigenous filmmakers here for Maoriland Festival
The second Maoriland Film Festival kicks off in Otaki today, bringing filmmakers from around the world to celebrate indigenous storytelling.
The six-day festival is modeled on the hugely successful Sundance Film Festival in the United States, which showcases the efforts of independent filmmakers and sets out to nurture their craft.
The Otaki festival will include indigenous filmmakers from Greenland and Siberia, Canada, USA, Australia and Latin America, as well as Maori.
The 11 features, 120 short films and documentaries will be screened at Raukawa Marae, the historic Rangiatea Church, Hadfield Hall, the 1940’s art deco theatre The Civic, and Te Wananga O Raukawa’s Nga Purapura stadium.
There are also school screenings, a rangatahi filmmaking competition and numerous workshops.
