Lashlie challenged prisoners to change
Justice reform advocate Kim Workman says Celia Lashlie stood out as someone who was not afraid to speak out even when it was likely her ideas would not meet official approval.
Ms Lashlie, who published several books on prison reform and parenting, died on Monday of pancreatic cancer at the age of 61.
Mr Workman says he first met her when she was a warder at Ohura prison near Taumaranui, and supported her subsequent career which included a remarkable spell at Christchurch Women's Prison.
" She understood that female prisoners almost always highly traumatised. They've been sexually and physically abused. Their lives have been crap. She didn't address their feelings she addressed their trauma. And she got right underneath all this stuff that was going on in their lives and challenged them to change. And alot of those people, those prisoners were transformed because of her " he says.
