Councillors oppose Te Arawa


Three Rotorua Lakes district councillors have joined a new group aimed at blocking moves to give Te Arawa a greater say in the council.
Councillor Mike McVicker says the proposal to appoint iwi representatives to council committees is totally undemocratic.
Last week’s inaugural meeting of the Rotorua Pro-Democracy Society to set up as an incorporated society and start raising funds to fight the proposal.
Councillor Glenys Searancke was elected chair and former Waiariki Institutte of Technology chief executive Reynold Macpherson secretary.
Councill Rob Kent is also a member, along with former district councillors Bob Martin, Cliff Lee, Julie Calnan and Rosemary Michie.
