Rankin goes burqa on Waitangi garb
People who want to wear the burqa under the blazing sun at Waitangi next week should not fear being chased off by David Rankin.
Northern elders say the self-styled Ngapuhi leader hasn’t been sighted at the event in recent years, despite trying to lay down the rules.
His call for the traditional Muslim head covering to be banned from Waitangi Day celebrations has outraged Maori and Muslim alike.
The Auckland plumber says Islam is a direct threat to Maori rangatiratanga, and the number of Maori converting to the religion was a concern.
Te Tai Tokerau MP Kelvin Davis says Muslims are welcome to attend the celebrations whether they’re wearing a burqa or a piupiu.
