Credit union opens branch on marae
The head of Waikato marae-based health, social services and education provider Te Kohao Health says a team-up with Aotearoa Credit Union fits in with a long-standing dream for a Maori bank.
The new outlet on Kirikiriroa Marae in Hamilton opens today offering loans, co-branded products such as the AccessDebit cards and other financial services, as well as a te reo Maori ATM.
Tureiti Moxon says it allows the community a way to tackle issues such as loan sharking.
She says it’s also a way the credit union can get back to its grass roots when it was started by June Jackson 25 years ago.
" We’re very pleased and very proud to be a part of that journey. In revitalising that, in revitalising a peoples bank. A bank that actually works in cooperation with the community and with the people that they serve. While it is great to have profit and everything, I think alot of banks have gone away from that very basic premise, that in the end it is all about people " she says.
Tureiti Moxon says Te Kohao Health is excited by the opportunity to provide financial services to more than 100 staff and 8000 clients throughout the Waikato region.
