Porirua-based iwi Ngati Toa hopes a new app for under-fives will help its drive to revive te reo Maori.
The app for smartphones and tablets was developed by three Whitireia Community Polytechnic Bachelor of IT students including Ngati Toa member Gina Solomon, who has mokopuna at the new Ngati Toa Puna Reo.
The students spent time at the Puna Reo, observing and interacting with the children and staff to understand their needs.
The app teaches simple Maori names, colours and numbers in a fun and friendly way and has development potential for all newcomers to te reo Maori.
