Nga Aho Whakaari queries TVNZ motives

The umbrella group for Maori in film and television is questioning Television New Zealand’s decision to axe its Maori and Pacific department.
The broadcaster says only Te Karere news will continue to be made in-house, with other programmes contracted out.
Nga Aho Whakaari board member Lanita Ririnui-Ryan says it raises doubts about the state broadcaster’s long term commitment to the Maori & Pacific voice.
She says TVNZ claims the move will create opportunities for independent production companies, but it has failed to consult the sector.
About 30 staff stand to lose their jobs in the move, although TVNZ says it would encourage the production houses who take over the programmes to take them on.
