Teachers can’t stomach Treasury cant
Primary school teachers are spitting at Treasury advice that there is no link between hunger and educational success.
Principal Lynda Stuart from May Road School in Auckland has challenged Treasury officials to go without breakfast for one month to share the experience of thousands of New Zealand children.
She says her school runs a breakfast club and sees first-hand how breakfast sets children up for the day.
NZEI Te Riu Roa president Judith Nowotarski says research consistently shows that children who do not have adequate food at home are likely to be more frequently absent or late to school than their peers, have lower academic achievement and poorer performance, especially in numeracy and literacy, and difficulty concentrating.
She says Treasury needs to stop indulging in its ideological agenda and see the real world.
