Flavell wants new direction
New Maori Development Minister Te Ururoa Flavell says he wants to see a major change in the way the portfolio is run.
Mr Flavell picked up the role, as well as responsibility for Whanau Ora and associate economic development, as part of the Maori Party's support agreement with National.
He says there needed to be a clear break with the past.
"Maori affairs has got connotations of the old colonial days and 'native' affairs and all that so I was keen to move out of that but also just to signal as we did in the election campaign that we want to take some new directions and really push on with giving our people the opportunities really to reach their potential, whether it be in economically in business and so on or just in their own lives," he says.
Te Ururoa Flavell says Maori people are keen to get into business, whether at the individual or iwi level.
