Gray in high wire bid for funding
Choreographer Tanemahuta Gray is seeking a $10,000 AMP Scholarship to help him stage a spectacular new production in Christchurch next year.
He is working on a bi-cultural aerial theatre production called Tiki Taane Mahuta, incorporating Tiki Taane's music, contemporary dance, hip hop, kapa haka and Maori martial arts and audio-visual effects from the team behind the World of Wearable Art show.
He wants to open it at the rebuilt Isaac Theatre Royal in Otautahi, nine years after the premiere there of his Maui – One Man Against the Gods.
He says it's a venture that will benefit not just him but everyone who works on it, as can be seen by the example of rigger Nick Creech, whose Maui experience was his ticket to a career with Canada's Circ du Soleil.
" The work we're doing helps create not only a cool show but also builds industry, builds future prospects for people and shows the arts is a viable career platform for people," Gray says.
People can support Tanemahuta Gray's bid for the AMP scholarship by going to the Tanemahuta Gray Creative Fanpage on Facebook and following the link to the AMP voting site.
