Quit smoking together

It’s October and that means it will be Stoptober for many smokers.
The quit smoking campaign is a chance for people to give up smoking along with their friends and family.
People who sign up on the stoptobernz.co.nz site will get 31 days of support, including daily emails and texts with stop smoking reminders and a downloadable app which has stress relief support in te reo Maori and English.
Campaign coordinator Shonagh Lindsay from Action on Smoking and Health says it’s an extremely successful UK model that New Zealand smokers responded well to.
" And actually what we found with Maori mostly and Pasifika was that they really responded well to the Stoptober imagery. What they liked about it was that it didn't point the finger at them, it just said, look all of us smoking can all quit together if we give this a really good go here's a great way to try it. They liked the idea it was celebratory and inclusive " she says.
Shonagh Lindsay says a lot more Maori need to quit soon if New Zealand is to reach its target of being tobacco free by 2025.
