Inspiring tohunga Amster Reedy dies
Teacher, tohunga and inspiration for many, Amster Reedy of Ngati Porou has died.
New Amsterdam Reedy was born in 1943 on a dairy farm near Ruatoria, and like his 17 siblings was named from a place involved in the war of for people from their iwi that fought in it.
He was well known throughout te ao Maori for his political activism, his scholarsip and knowledge of te reo me nga tikanga and for his skills as a healer and mediator.
Ngapuhi kuia Titewhai Harawira says he was foundation member of Mana Motuhake and a wonderful person to work with.
He also made himself available as a consultant and kuamatua to New Zealand’s Olympic teams to ensure what they were projecting of Maori culture was done right.
"Amster has made a huge contribution towards providing a wonderful image for us as tangata whenua here in Aotearoa as well as on the international scene," Mrs Harawira says.
