Ngata lectures in Poneke

Ngati Porou comes to Poneke today, holding the 31st annual Ngata Lectures at Te Papa Tongarewa.
Speakers this year include Te Runanganui o Ngati Porou chair Apirana Mahuika, Sir Tamati Reedy, Dame Iritana Tawhiwhirangi, Education Minister Hekia Parata, and artist and composer Derek Lardelli.
Sir Tamati says he's privileged to talking about Sir Apirana Ngata, the giant of Hikurangi maunga, and he will draw on his own memories.
" I was a whipper snapper in the time, going to school and he (Sir Apirana Ngata) use to call in at Hiruharama Native School. Of course we were the natives of the school there then and he just called in to see how we were as tamariki growing up in the valleys of Ngati Porou lands. So we knew this man was important in some way but as youngsters and it's only in later years that we've grown up to understand his enormous contribution in the development of our people and the nation " he says.
The Ngata Lectures will be streamed live around the world from Te Papa Tongarewa.
