Tamaki claim nears settlement
It’s time to brush up again on the real names of Auckland’s maunga.
Parliament is this week expected to pass a bill providing redress for the shared interests of 13 Auckland iwi and hapu in relation to 14 volcanic cones, islands and land within Tamaki Makaurau.
The deal will involve a number of name changes of well known landmarks.
The ownership of significant maunga will vest in Nga Mana Whenua o Tamaki Makaurau – the Tamaki Collective, which will jointly manage them with Auckland Council.
Mayor Len Brown says the new body will recognise the importance of the cones to mana whenua in a tangible way, and it will mark a new relationship with Maori.
Tamaki Collective chair Paul Majurey says the legislation completes five years of collective tribal endeavour.
