Change at the top for wananga
The controversial principal of a Northland School and a senior executive in a fellow wananga are among the new managers at Te Wananga o Aotearoa.
Tumuaki Jim Mather says he was overwhelmed by the high number and quality of applicants for all positions, which are part of a redesign of systems at the wananga, which serves almost 32,000 students across 120 locations.
The role of executive director for student services will be taken by Keri Milne-Ihimaera, who is currently the principal of Moerewa School.
In that role she had a long-running battle with the Education Ministry over keeping on students rather than sending them on to local high schools.
The new deputy chief executive is John Whaanga, the former chief advisor on wananga investment at the Tertiary Education Commission.
Te Wananga o Raukawa’s head of academic programmes, Pakake Winiata, is coming over to take on a similar role at Te Wananga o Aotearoa.
Nepia Winiata, who is currently the wananga’s Tamaki Makaurau regional operations manager and area manager for Te Taitokerau, becomes the executive director of education delivery services.
Hone Paul comes back from brand managing SBS Television in Australia to head up marketing, and the Waikato Institute of Technology’s information technology director Garry Johnston takes over IT.
