Strong Maori contenders for Labour list
The Labour Party releases its list this afternoon and Hauraki-Waikato MP Nanaia Mahuta is expecting a strong Maori showing.
The moderating committee of 35 party members and three MPs spent the weekend working through the candidates and ranking them based on recommendations from the regions, achievement and appeal to voters.
Ms Mahuta says what was noticeable about the regional selections was the number of strong Maori candidates contesting both the Maori and general seats.
"What it signals is a new type of leadership among Maoridom, a new generation of leadership but certainly in Labour a generational shift of where Maori are moving towards and then Labour needs to come more towards that type of sentiment. We’ve got Rawiri Waititi, Peeni Henare, Willow Jean Prime, Tamati Coffery, Adrian Rurawhe, the list goes on, so it’s a really exciting field of candidates and I’m expecting to see our team place very well," she says.
The list will be out at 2 this afternoon.
