Best of contemporary carving on display
Visitors to the Dowse Gallery in Lower Hutt will get a rare chance to see some of the best contemporary Maori carving over the next few months.
Matatoki brings together work by 11 carvers who studied in Rotorua, including Lewis Gardiner, Ian-Wayne Grant, and Simon Lardelli.
Dowse director Courtney Johnston says most of the carvers’ work finds a home outside Aotearoa.
"They’re sending it offshore to American and Canadian audiences where it is being snapped up by museums and by private collectors so they have managed to create for themselves these internatioonal careers and then at home often the projects they are working on are with local marae so having a public gallery show like this is a really unusual way of getting to see these works that the general public usually don’t have access to," she says.
