Political expediency in claim push

One of the leaders of the challenge to the Ngapuhi treaty settlement process says the real story is coming out at last.
The Waitangi Tribunal has just finished a two-day a judicial conference at Waitangi on whether it should hold an urgent hearing into the way the government decided it should negotiate a settlement with the Ngapuhi Runanga-backed body Tuhorokuku.
Te Kotahitanga co-chair Pita Tipene from Ngati Hine says opponents of the plan have been painted as a small minority, but no other treaty settlement has generated such a significant level of opposition.
"The crown were embarrassed because the case was being taken against them, not directly against Tuhoronuku, and the truth is beginning to be revealed in a public forum about how the crown has aided and abetted Tuhoronuku, provided over $2 million in funds to them to achieve that, and all for political expediency," Mr Tipene says.
