Museum funds for Chathams


Moriori and Maori from the Chatham Islands will have a new home for their taonga.
Arts, Culture and Heritage Minister Christopher Finlayson today announced a announced today a grant of just over $1 million towards the construction of a purpose-built Chatham Islands Museum.
He says the museum’s collections will cover the history of Moriori, Maori and European settlement, as well as maritime history and the unique flora and fauna of the region.
At the other Waitangi in the Bay of Islands, another $2.5 million is going to the Waitangi National Trust.
Mr Finlayson says the Museum of Waitangi will be part of the major redevelopment at the Treaty Grounds which is being done to coincide with the 175th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty next year.
There was also $500,000 granted to Christchurch City Council towards the earthquake recovery and rejuvenation project at Akaroa Museum, most of which was closed after engineering assessments found it was below 34 percent of the new building standards.
