Police inaction queried in Henderson slaying

Tai Tokerau MP Hone Harawira says police were warned about a build up of truanting youngsters around the Henderson Mall but failed to act.
A 13-year-old has been charged with murder and a 12-year-old with aggravated robbery in relation to the death of Henderson dairy owner Arun Kumnar, who died of stab wounds to his neck yesterday morning.
Mr Harawira, who has an electorate office nearby, says his brother Tai keeps an eye on the carpark and river areas where kids hang out.
"He’d actually warned the cops about what he felt was a build up of young kids from a particular part of the community. He said ‘You guys need to step in and do something about this,’ and they haven’t, so there’s a lot of kids who aren’t at school, who haven’t got jobs, who are just hanging around doing dumb things," he says.
