Maori immigration fears taken seriously
Labour MP Nanaia Mahuta says Maori share similar concerns to other New Zealanders about immigration policies.
A new poll by the Asia NZ Foundation has found 44 per cent of Maori are less positive about people from Asia compared with a year ago.
That compares with 27 percent of all New Zealanders who have more negative feelings.
Ms Mahuta says the concern is understandable given the way the Government has boosted immigration levels without having any clear plan.
"If they are at levels where is unsustainable in the domestic labour market and locals end up not getting jibs, then we’ve got to do something about it. That’s what Labour is saying. We are actually going to look at curbing the numbers coming in because what’s starting to happen is we haven’t got kiwi jobs for kiwi people and immigrants are being brought in for jobs where we can train our own people," she says.
