Tourism goes into dark zone

Waitomo Glowworm Caves will add science to spectacle in a new programme unveiled at this week’s TRENZ tourism showcase.
The Maori-owned caves, which have been the site of guided tours for 125 years, is aiming its new educational programme at international students aged from 12 to 21.
Expert staff will talk about caves and their formation, glowworm biology and cave ecology, limestone landscapes, and local Maori heritage.
Maori ventures are also part of what’s being dubbed the Middle-earth Trilogy Supercharged package announced at TRENZ.
The two day self-drive trip includes the Hobbiton movie set near Matamata, a descent into Waitomo’s Ruakiri Cave with The Legendary Black Water Rafting Company, and geothermal wonders and Maori culture at Te Puia in Rotorua.
