Irwin on wananga board
Tertiary Education Minister Steven Joyce has appointed prominent Maori educationalist Kathie Irwin to the board of Te Wananga o Aotearoa.
Dr Irwin’s career has focused on Maori research, development and scholarship, including roles at Victoria University and Te Whare Wananga o Awanuiarangi.
She worked at Te Puni Kokiri to create the Cultural Futures Project before spending three years as an analyst and director kaupapa Maori research and evaluation at the Families Commission.
Last month she was appointed by a national hui to be on a working group developing a new governance model for kohanga reo.
Te Wananga o Aotearoa is poised for significant change under new chief executive Jim Mather, who is keen to boost its role in indigenous development and find new income streams such as corporate training and fee-paying international students.
And Wellington-region polytechnic WelTec and Whitireia has appointed Antony Royal to its board.
Mr Royal is a member of Te Huarahi Tika Maori Spectrum Trust and a director of 2 Degrees Mobile.
He also chairs Te Mana o Kupe Trust, which is supporting 13 Porirua East schools to increase their use of technology.
