Push for Waikato super-council
The Waikato branch of the Property Council will today present the Local Government Commission with a formal proposal for a Waikato super-council.
The council would take in Hamilton City, the Waikato, Waipa and Matamata-Piako districts, as well as parts of Otorohanga, South Waikato and Waitomo districts, replacing existing councils with one mayor, 16 councillors and 11 community boards.
Special provision would be made for Maori representation.
Former Hamilton mayor Margaret Evans says change is essential, because too much red tape has caused widespread dissatisfaction with local government.
