Museum picks Soutar as WWW1 expert
The author of an acclaimed history of the Maori Battalion’s C Company, Monty Soutar, had been appointed the Auckland War Memorial Museum’s World War 1 historian in residence.
Dr Soutar will act as the museum’s World War 1 spokesperson during the centenary period.
In recent years to the former soldier has been coordinating the 28 Maori Battalion website.
The museum is planning a similar site to make available an enhanced version of its Cenotaph database of deceased New Zealanders who served their country during conflict.
The Online Cenotaph project has received a $300,000 grant from the Ministry for Culture and Heritage.
It’s seen as an online social space where enthusiasts, family and researchers alike, can share their information and experiences of New Zealand servicemen and women.
