Kelvin Davis ready to step up
Soon to be MP Kelvin Davis says he feels it’s time to step up and make his mark on politics.
Mr Davis will be back in parliament as soon as Shane Jones gives up his list seat for a diplomatic career.
He’s got more experience and more confidence then when he entered parliament in 2008 on Labour’s list, and he says not having his mentor there means the pressure will be on to show what he is capable of in his own right.
"You know as generations move on those of us coming through, we have to step up, and everyone knows I’m not a fluent native speaker and it’s a big ask but there’s nothing like being put out of your comfort zone to grow you as a politician, as a person, as a Maori," Mr Davis says.
He says Shane Jones’ resignation brought forward his own departure from the Education Ministry, as he was intending to leave anyway in early May to campaign full time for Te Tai Tokerau.
