Lessons drawn from Battalion trip

Forty East Coast schoolchildren will get a send off at Ruatoria this weekend as they head for North Africa and Europe to follow the footsteps of the Maori Battalion’s C Company.
Education Minister Hekia Parata says it’s a great initiative that has been years in the planning.
She says students have been writing essays and presentations about the Battalion and what it means for the descendants of those who fought.
" I think this is really exciting that the schools and community of these students have made relevant their study of what the Maori Battalio did so long ago and what it means for young people today " she says.
Hekia Parata says the Ngarimu VC and 28 Maori Battalion Association have helped with some of the funding for the trip and for a documentary that will be made of it.
