Mayor launches jobs push
Auckland Mayor Len Brown has launched a plan to increase youth employment in the super city.
He says more than 27,000 young Aucklanders are not in education, employment or training, and more than half of this group are Maori and Pacific.
His Youth Employment Traction Plan includes a new office to coordinate initiatives across the region, a pledge to more than double numbers in Auckland Council’s graduate and cadet programmes, and regular summits to bring together young people, business leaders and youth organisations.
He used the first such summit today to call on Auckland businesses to back the initiative by working with the council.
As part of the initiative, Warehouse founder Sir Stephen Tindall announced funding of $1.85m over three years to support the council’s existing Youth Connections Across Auckland programme, which matches young people with local employment and training opportunities.
