Actor and director Nancy Brunning has won this year’s Adam Award for Best Play by a Maori Playwright for her first play Hikoi, which will premiere in Wellington in June.
Brunning was also named as co-runner up for the main award, which was won by another actor turned writer, Elisabeth Easter, for Seed.
The judges described Hikoi as a moving and powerful play about a Maori family facing radical change in the 1970s and 80s.
The Adam NZ Play Award, now in its seventh year, is the only one of its kind for new writing.
