Hokianga hapu reject Tuhoronuku mandate
The co-chair of Te Kotahitanga o Nga Hapu o Ngapuhi says the tribe needs more time to sort out its differences before entering treaty settlement negotiations.
The Government last week announced it was accepting the mandate of the Ngapuhi Runanga-backed Tuhoronuku to negotiate Te Paparahi of Te Raki claims.
Rudy Taylor says that’s despite the majority of submissions being against the terms of the deed of mandate.
"Now the minister is saying Tuhoronuku has got the job and they have got to deliver it and they’ve got to try to get everyone and be inclusive. Well, the set up of it goes against us from the word go. So it’s just another process that the Crown believes Tuhoronuku can deliver. We say they can’t," he says.
Mr Taylor says Hokianga hapu have voted to stay out of Tuhoronuku, and they are considering court action and Waitangi Tribunal claims to challenge the Government’s decision.
