Education study wins research kudos
Canterbury University professor of Maori research Angus Hikairo Macfarlane has become the first Maori to win the university’s research medal.
Professor Macfarlane, from Ngati Whakaue and Ngati Rangiwewehi, is the director of the Te Ru Rangahau: Maori Education Research Laboratory.
His current projects include the Ka Awatea study of high-achieving Rotorua rangatahi in their final year of school.
The data collected is being used to develop what he calls the mana model of student success.
He is also working on the Huakina Mai (Opening Doorways) project for the Ministry of Education, aimed at identifying effective ways to support rangatahi experiencing difficulties in learning and behaviour.
For the Ministry of Social Development, Professor Macfarlane is evaluating the family group conference process.
