Hauraki identify settlement assets
Hauraki iwi are looking at other iwi and commercial opportunities in their rohe as they try to bring their drawn out settlement negotiations to a conclusion.
Five of the 12 iwi have taken an advance payment to buy the 2200 hectare Pouarua dairy complex near Ngatea from Landcorp.
Hauraki Collective chair Paul Majurey says other iwi are looking at other opportunities that have been identified through the negotiation process, with two iwi looking to pick up Whenuakite Station on the Coromandel Peninsula.
"There’s around 30,000 hectares of forests. There are commercial properties, all the sorts of things you find in settlements around the motu which are particular to the geography of those locations. There’s also the important co-governance and cultural expressions in terms of the return of tupuna maunga, co-governance of waterways and lands and the moana, that overall mix is important to us," Mr Majurey says.
The settlement is likely to be concluded late 2014 or 2015.
