Victoria University’s Maori studies department wants to give its students a taste of the past.
It is building a traditional maara kai or vegetable garden behind its building Te Kawa a Maui.
Associate Professor Peter Adds says planting will be scheduled around the Maori calendar, and the school is working with the Botanical Society to source pre-European cultigens including yams, taro, gourds and kumara.
He says part of the research is to find which traditional Maori plants will grow in Wellington’s climate.
