Reservation status for Wainuiomata Marae
After almost 30 years of lobbying, land around and under Wainuiomata Marae has been made a Maori reservation.
The marae was built in 1965 with the support of Te Atiawa and the Wainuiomata community to support the suburb’s growing Maori population.
Manager Linda Olsen says changing the formal status of the 3.5 hectares gives room for expansion and new programmes.
"There will be future plans for a future generation. We've done our bash, this generation, so the land is back and we'll see what the future holds for the next gerneration that upholds the mantle of the marae," she says.
